Nature v. Profit.

Elmadağ This is the summer where I’ll be experimenting with getting much closer to nature – growing and gathering much more of my own food, and in general finding ways to do things without any monetary intermediary.  I’m still very far from this ideal – dandelion salads and blueberry and apple picking has been the extent of my experiments in this regard so far – but I just started gathering my own spring water more regularly.  Bit by bit I’m getting acquainted with nature.

As a landmark Save the Children report in 2007 noted: “Almost 1.4 million children are still dying every year because they are not getting enough of their mother’s milk. Aggressive marketing by companies is one of the reasons babies are not breastfed.”

If there can be any sin in manipulation and profiteering, this has got to be it.  I’d ban this stuff in a heartbeat.  Formula should only be available for medical necessities – with a prescription.  There’s plenty of scientific data proving it is worse in every respect than the real thing.  Of course no one profits from natural exchange like mothers nursing their children.  Beyond it being a victory for nature and health over corporate profiteering, breastfeeding is supposed to be good for the brain.  My mother was quite the zealot in this regard – she thinks half the stupidity in the world is due to babies being given treated cow-milk.  She breastfed me for three and a half years.
