Diane, I've seen Grizzly Man - essay about it here: http://www.johnbyronkuhner.com/2011/08/further-thoughts-on-grizzly-man/

And the DEC won't move the bear, but there's some chance that they will come and kill it if I complain about it more. http://www.johnbyronkuhner.com/2012/08/where-the-bad-bears-go/

And Mike, yes I thought you might have meant Herzog, but I figured you would know better than me. :)

PS: that long critter you saw definitely sounds like a weasel in his/her summer coat. In our experience they're not at all shy.

John. Sorry to hear about what happened.

You'll have to be very, very clean from now on. Keep your food well sealed up. Keep doors & windows closed when you're not there. Also, pack your trash out diligently.

The bear really doesn't want to deal with you, despite his looks. Give him no reason to force the issue.

Most important: never, ever, ever try to outrun a bear. You will lose the race. Never corner a bear either. Make a lot of noise when you are home. When I lived back into the woods I often wore a cowbell.

My place was broken into once, by raccoons. They made a big mess also. The clue was the footprints around the toilet seat.

All you can do is the best you can. There's a lot of web information on dealing with bears, too. I believe the DEC can also help with advice.

John, as far as I'm concerned there are only two acceptable ways for you to die* and becoming an animal's lunch is NOT one of them! While I hope a non-lethal (for the bear) solution can be found, if it can't, then so be it.

*either in defense of some noble cause or at the end of a lettered old age and surrounded by your grieving wife, children, and grandchildren.

You need to watch the documentary "Grizzly Man". Seriously, you should call the DEC/DEP and have them move the bear out of the area. He's going to use your cabin as his commissary until someone stops him.
