Something I have never seen before, an easy-chair whose cover is stitched with quotations from Horace’s Ars Poetica. ”There is more in heaven and earth than is dreamt of in your philosophy, Horatio.” Unfortunately the shop, in Delhi, New York, where this was seen, was closed. ”It is not enough that poems should be beautiful; they shall be sweet; they shall send the soul of the listener wherever they want it to go.”
Horatian Easychair.

This upholstery material was on sale in the UK a few years ago. I have a hat made out of the same design (in an orange-on-red colour scheme) which I bought at Bath Christmas market in about 2009. The maker, Tamsin Young, told me it was unique because although she’d used the material for other hats they weren’t the same design. I’m rather pleased that I’ve been walking around with quotations from Horace on my head, though a little ashamed that as a classicist I hadn’t recognised them.
