		<description>I like that idea. Though it must depend on the sense of the humor, and the sound of the laughter it inspires. Misspent levity can be a kind of cruelty. 

This reminds me of that monk in The Name of the Rose who said that laughter was the principle of all evil. He just couldn&#039;t handle a joshing Jesus!

I don&#039;t know much about Lawrence the man but he doesn&#039;t strike me as the type of guy who could take a joke. More of a Leeds than a Franklin.</description>

		<description>One of the more intriguing parts of Isaacson&#039;s biography is a review of the bile Franklin has inspired, including that piece from D.H. Lawrence.  I will confess I am a bit mystified by so much opposition to Franklin. His irony is not the preferred method for all - and not for me either - but as with much 18th century irony, it covers depths.  Humor may be the deepest depth anyway.  It certainly does seem to be the way to make some kind of public progress out of private depth, which is secretly in the heart of every artist, I think.</description>
