Elizabeth, you're right that the word "Protestant" is a bit sweeping here. Obviously it's hard to complain about Quakers or Shakers or many other true Christians of all sorts.

Lovely piece, John. Your comments remind me not only of Elizabeth Warren's thoughts about the exploitation of labor of the 98%, but also of my own on-going curiosity about why the Democratic party refuses to make a moral (and even, in Obama's case, explicitly Christian) argument about the rightness of a social contract. And lest I fail to stand up for my own, there are some Protestants who feel an equal dis-ease with wealth, at least among my own Presbyterian (read, stingy) cohort. But perhaps that comes merely from only having sheep.

Maybe on some level an argument could be made this isn't a state issue, but Romney goes way further, saying "I'll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives."

They can't be convinced to care for their lives!!! What an insult!
