Staten Island.

28-Jul-10

The book is stalled a bit, as we’re looking for the right paper for the edition, which needs a 19th c. feel; the papers looked a bit modern and slick and had to be changed.  I’ll keep you updated.

Gone Latin-speakin’…

17-Jul-10

Will probably be out of touch for awhile, as I’ve gone off to rusticate.

On Abraham.

13-Jul-10

I’ve been wanting to write an essay about Abraham for awhile, and I’m not sure I put the essay below together in quite the way I wanted to, but the story of God demanding sin from us fascinates me.  It fascinated Jung too, who said he saw the evidence of this in his patients, and [...]

The Book.

21-May-10

You can pre-order the Staten Island book now.  I am excited by it; it looks to be a thing of beauty.  The illustrations by Lesley Chen are extraordinary.  I’m told I’ve pre-sold three copies, thereby exceeding all expectations.
Selling books reminds me of Thoreau’s printing of a thousand copies of his first book - which admittedly [...]

Jung.

27-Apr-10

“Everything that irritates us about others can lead us to an understanding of ourselves.” - Carl Jung.

Taqqiya.

15-Apr-10

One of my minor fascinations/horrors is the Islamic concept of taqqiya - which I also see spelled taqiyya - “religious lying.”  It is associated mostly with Shiites, who were a minority in much of the Islamic world, and hence concealing their religion when asked about it point-blank was at times prudent.  Of course once this [...]

Hitler.

25-Mar-10

“For over five years this man has been chasing around Europe like a madman in search of something he could set on fire.  Unfortunately he again and again finds hirelings who open the gates of their country to this international incendiary.” - Adolf Hitler, describing Winston Churchill in 1941.
Do we need any further proof of [...]

Virginia Brown.

11-Mar-10

A really lovely tribute to a lady and a scholar, by her husband.  Her story is as remarkable as she was:
She had grown up in Lake Providence, Louisiana, a small town in the northeast of the state near the Arkansas border, in what was and still is the poorest county in the United States. Her [...]

Peregrine Falcon vs. Snowy Owl

03-Mar-10

From the December NYS Conservationist magazine, a set of photos of a battle between a peregrine falcon and a snowy owl at Jones Beach.  One of the things I’ve been meditating on recently is the way the Roman Pliny sees nature as a kind of gladiatorial show, with every animal having a special “natural enemy” [...]

Ash Wednesday.

17-Feb-10

Lent begins.  In the town of Liberty for the observance.  “In Libertatem vocati estis, fratres.”  Discipline, discipline, discipline.
