Detroit Safari.

One of the yearly events at the Hillbilly Underground is a trip through the ruins of Detroit, which astonished me, though I am a student of ruins and desolation.  Detroit is the most intense urban desolation I have ever seen, anywhere.  I will provide more links to this, as I digest it, but more or less we wandered through vast - unspeakably vast - destroyed buildings, and it was hard not to ask who or what destroyed them, and why.

When you have the time check out http://www.sweet-juniper.com — he posts a lot on his family, but extensively on Detroit. Gorgeous photography, and he’s a bit of a Classicist.

  3. I made Carly’s suggestion above a live link, because Sweet Juniper is a fantastic blog. I highly recommend it. Some perusal of that site can also help answer Cary’s question. Sweet Juniper mentioned 10,000 abandoned buildings, and that sounds like a realistic figure for Detroit.

  5. As I understand it, James Griffioen is the author of the Sweet Juniper blog - they’re one and the same. But Jen’s link links you more directly to the photographs. They are astonishing.
