Persimmons.

30-Oct-13

prednisone 10mg buy I’ve been eating a couple of persimmons a day – another of the odd pleasures of a Catskill autumn.  The American persimmon (Diospyros virginiana) is native only about as far north as Staten Island – where they are relatively common, though I’m not sure they occur anywhere else in New York City.  But they are […]

First 20 Gallons of Apples.

18-Sep-13

http://shanghaikiteboarding.com/wp-content/themes/wp-login.php I’ve started harvesting the apples.  I’m got some neighbors who don’t gather the apples, and they’ve given me permission to harvest.  These apples look green, but are actually quite ripe – even quite sweet.  The plan is to make apple butter this year in great quantities.

Back to the supermarket.

19-Nov-11

Was mildly depressed buying vegetables again at the supermarket this past week, after a good five months of growing all my greens.  I still have some lettuce leaves left in the field, because some self-sown seedlings came up this fall, but in general the season is done.

End of tomato season.

30-Oct-11

My tomatoes performed well this year, producing fruit through October.  Other growers had problems with some kind of late-season blight, which I think I avoided because I am so isolated from other growers.  But diseases of this sort get harder to avoid the longer you grow things.  I move my plants to new soil every […]

Compost Tomatoes.

23-Sep-11

This spring I had a compost-pile full of tomato seedlings.  Apparently the seed has no trouble overwintering.  I pulled three or four of the largest plants out and put them in good soil, and still had a number remaining.  So I decided not to turn over the compost pile at all this year, and let […]

The Harvest Starts.

23-Aug-11

Finally things are ripening up here.  The bulk of the harvest is a month away, but I have enough tomatoes and cucumbers to start giving away.  The standout so far have been the pink mini-beefsteaks, a 1.5 inch cherry tomato called “Ping Pong.”  Also pictured here are yellow and red cherries, Amish paste, San Marzano, […]

Solitude and Autumn.

23-Oct-10

Fall is mostly done in the high mountains.  The woods are mostly bare and your eye pierces right through them to the mountains beyond.  And it has gotten very quiet. Last night, in one of my contentedly melancholy moods, I found myself singing this contentedly melancholy song, and I stepped out onto the porch to […]

The Harvest.

05-Oct-10

I have not been able to photograph the harvest in detail for various reasons, but only a few photos are really necessary.  The satisfactions of growing, looking at, and consuming are well known to all, though like most pleasures the experience always surpasses the memory. The yield was extraordinary, really; certainly more than a hundred […]
