Plateau Mountain.

Latur As I headed up Plateau Mountain yesterday I thought to myself, “John, you’re doing this all wrong, Plateau you do in the morning, to get the light on the mountains, and Giant Ledge in the evening.”  But it was just the right hike to do, even though the picture-into-the-light can’t capture it.  So beautiful.  The boughs were loaded down with berries on my way up – viburnums and blackberries providing the energy for my body, as I brought no other food.  The Plateau Mountain trail is one of the hardest in the Catskills, at a 40% grade.  It’s part of the Devil’s Path.  But if you need to get up into the magical Balsam forest quickly, that’s the path to take.  The balsam needles at this time of year are fat and resinous and smell amazing – I rubbed them on my neck and wrists to try to take some of that amazing smell down off the mountaintop with me, but the smell of the mountains never lasts.

hand-to-mouth Fall color is beginning here.  It’s time to visit the high mountains.
