From the Bizarre Catholicism Department…

purchase generic isotretinoin This was too good not to comment on: French Priest Traveling In U.S.A. With Relics of St. Mary Magdalene. Apparently a priest is going on tour with some bits of bone, purported to be those of Mary Magdalene.  And she’ll be making an appearance in New York City, at St. Vincent Ferrer, on Monday.

http://dearmckenzie.com/wp-admin/cgialfa I got a message about this because I’m on the New York Catholic email list.  I didn’t think too much of it when the message first appeared in my inbox, but the more I considered it the more completely bizarre it appeared to me.  I’m fond of relics myself – sometimes it’s amazing to have a connection, however remote and trivial, with lives famed in story – but having them travel all over the world is really quite a curious religious practice.  The bones are very unlikely to have much of anything to do with Mary of Magdala, but whosever they are, they’re probably from someone who never dreamed that her bones would end up on 65th Street and Lexington Avenue.  The pictured apparatus, complete with the brass plate with “Marie Madeleine” in wedding-invitation script, is apparently the mode of transport for these bones.  And really, the priest who is doing this must be worth a look, just to write a story about him someday.  The story could be anything from a brief Chekhovian sketch to a Boccaccian romp to a Twainish “Holy Nonesuch” to a Quixote-esque epic on the nature of human society.  Unbelievable.

And imagine if they are the bones of Mary Magdalene, if by some insanity present in the universe the fate of the molecules of one of the friends of Jesus Christ would be to travel the world this way for all eternity, or at least until we all die of this rabid madness called being human.

If anyone goes, please do tell me about it.
