Snowmageddon Fallout.

02-Mar-10

Sankt Ingbert There’s still no power here in the valley, a week after the snow began.  Official totals (as I hear through the grapevine, which certainly doesn’t decrease the total) for the upper elevations in this area for last week was 55 inches.  This is believable.  It has been compressing impressively; in front of my house, my […]

March Begins.

02-Mar-10

Ilave Dawn from the cabin.  The month of melting begins.

Winter and Rough Weather.

23-Feb-10

Wow.  It just keeps snowing here.  It’s been snowing all day, wet snow, blizzard conditions, the whole thing.  At least eight inches, but who knows how much there really is, and no sign of stopping either.  I was planning on heading to the library today for some intellectual nourishment, but that has been postponed.  I […]

Uncle John’s Cabin.

17-Feb-10

February at the cabin.  Every bit as cold as it looks.

Snowpocalypse.

11-Feb-10

Not much in the Catskills, in fact.  Five inches, perhaps.  Looks pretty, no doubt.  But not a big storm here at all.  In fact, there hasn’t been nearly so much snow here this year as snowy places like Virginia Beach, or Ocean City.

Back to the Cabin.

03-Feb-10

I had been gone for ten days.  When I woke up yesterday morning, it was 30 degrees – and that was inside the cabin.  Though I had had a fire the previous night, the first few fires warm the air only, and at night the coldness of the structure reasserts itself.  A book, for instance, […]

Tracking the Bear.

15-Jan-10

I left around 11:30 this morning to follow the tracks up the mountain.  Any doubts I had were quickly resolved; the tracks went underneath low-lying branches and in certain places the pawprints were crystal-clear.  It was indeed a bear, wandering around in mid-January. For the most part the tracks were clear.  They came to one […]

Neighbors or Neighbears?

14-Jan-10

Coming home yesterday I was surprised by a large set of tracks coming from the mountain, crossing my driveway, and continuing downhill.  I presumed they belonged to a man, but I had never seen human tracks on my property before, and hunting season is over.  The person apparently was out for secrecy too, because instead […]

Inside a mouse’s brain.

14-Jan-10

There’s a light, powdery snow on the ground , and a tiny animal like a mouse has to push his way through it, rather than walk on top of it.  The result are some fabulous tracks.  What’s it like to be inside that little brain, going around in circles like that?  Probably not that different, […]

Home Puttering.

04-Jan-10

Warmer weather today.  In the 20s, and the wind almost entirely stopped.  Carolina Blue skies too – really just a lovely day.  Three coyotes swung by last night, one crossing right in front of the house.  The deer have fallen into a pattern the past few days, taking a trail that crosses by the stream. […]
